While we eagerly wait for an announcement from Nintendo regarding their next console, let’s talk a little bit about their current-generation console; the Nintendo Switch. Released in March 2017, it’s been a little over 7 years since the Switch was released. While it was to compete with the PS4 and Xbox One, it has managed to fare well against the current generation Xbox Series X/S and PS5 as well.

While its hardware is not even as good as the PS4, what makes the Switch stand strong even today, is the amount of first-party releases from Nintendo alongside a great number of indie releases. Another factor for the Switch’s popularity is emulation on other platforms, so that you can enjoy the best Switch games on other platforms. How does one do that? Well, read on below!

Against the PS5 and the Series X/S, the Nintendo Switch has managed to stand strong | Nintendo

What Exactly is Emulation?

Emulation is the act of mimicking a device or program using another device or program. Put simply, it is to run programs of another device normally incompatible with your device using the help of a program. Emulators are used to help test programs developed for another device, but mostly used to enjoy retro console games across a wide range of devices that would normally be incapable of running them.

An example of an emulator would the Game Boy emulator available with the Nintendo Switch Online membership, that allows you to play classic Game Boy games from the library provided by Nintendo. While emulation through this subscription is online, usually emulation takes place on your hardware and requires particularly powerful hardware, especially your CPU, which is going to do the heavy lifting.

Other than the Game Boy, the Nintendo Switch Online membership offers emulation for other iconic Nintendo consoles like the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) | Nintendo

Emulators are usually developed by fans of the console and depending on how old the console being emulated is, the emulator may be available for a wide variety of devices. For example, PPSSPP, an emulator for the PSP is available on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, and even on a jailbroken PS4, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. The older the device, the better its emulator is going to perform too.

The Current State of Switch Emulation

Since the Switch doesn’t have particularly powerful hardware, it is relatively easy to emulate. In fact, Switch emulators are miles ahead in terms of stability, especially when compared to PS4 emulators, which have yet to progress past the menu screen of a game, even after nearly a decade. This is because games on the Switch are not that graphically demanding, hence making it easier to emulate.

However, that doesn’t mean that Switch emulation is perfect. Every Switch emulator up till now is experimental, and depending on the emulator you’re using, along with the specs of your device (you’re going to need a beefy setup), the performance can vary vastly from game to game. And that’s without factoring in the multiple graphics and other performance-related settings available within the emulator.

The Nintendo Switch emulation community has come a long way | Digital Exhibition

About around 2 years ago, Switch emulation made its way to the Android platform. However, since it is a recent development, only a couple of games are able to run properly. It also requires some pretty powerful hardware for phones, so it’s recommended for flagship and gaming phones. Nevertheless, it is quite the milestone for the emulation community.

Best Switch Emulators

At any rate, here are the best emulators for the Nintendo Switch:

1. Ryujinx

Ryujinx is the most compatible emulator across most platforms | Ryujinx

Ryujinx is the most compatible emulator for PC platforms as its available for Windows, macOS, and Linux platforms from their official website. It’s also completely open-source too, so you might find unofficial forks and ports for other platforms. Below are the recommended specs needed to run Ryujinx:

  • CPU: Ryzen 5 3600
  • RAM: 16GB DDR4
  • GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1060 6GB
  • Windows 10.0.17134 or higher / macOS 12 or higher / Any modern Linux distribution (the essential dependencies must be supported by that distribution)

As mentioned earlier, depending on your PC’s specs and the game you’re trying to run, you will face different levels of performance compared to another PC. Make sure to watch some YouTube videos for the best possible settings within Ryujinx to achieve maximum performance. You can also browse this compatibility list to check the compatibility level of your desired game and check on any issues.

2. Yuzu

Yuzu was the most popular Nintendo Switch emulator before Nintendo put an end to it | Shandell Jones

Yuzu was the best Switch emulator out there before Nintendo decided to sue its developers for promoting privacy and other issues. As a result, the developers shut down the project and stopped development on March 2024. However, since it was an open-source emulator, it has numerous forks and unofficial releases. Even now, you can find Yuzu on the Internet Archive by searching for it.

Yuzu was available for only Windows PCs and received an official Android port in May 2023. It was also able to run in a stable condition on a Steam Deck. However, since the project was shut down nearly a year after its release, its Android port is still very experimental and only able to run a few games on a handful of mobile device. Here are the PC specs required to run the last Yuzu build to have been released:

  • CPU: Ryzen 5 3600
  • RAM: 16GB DDR4
  • GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1060 6GB
  • Windows 10 or higher

3. Sudachi

Sudachi maintains the spirit of Yuzu, down to its UI | Retro Crisis

Sudachi is one of the many proclaimed Yuzu successors out there, but its the only true one. A fork of Yuzu and picking off where the original developers stopped, Sudachi is keeping the spirit of Yuzu alive along with the hard work of the original developers. Since Sudachi is only a few months old, it is still very experimental, but somewhat stable.

Currently, Sudachi is available on the Windows, Linux and Android platforms. The Android port, in particular, has received high praise, but still requires a very powerful phone. The Windows and Linux ports are also very polished. There are no official specs outlined by the developers, nor any hint as to what is the performance of games, but rest assured, the developers are hard at work.

Since Sudachi has no official requirements, it’s best to use Yuzu’s requirements as a benchmark. After all, it’s based off Yuzu. As for the Android port, we would recommend using a phone with at least 4 GB RAM, runs Android 14 and has a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor.

Emulation and Piracy

As mentioned above, Yuzu was shut down by Nintendo, as they claimed that the emulator was “enabling and intensifying” piracy and making profit off of their misfortunes. We’re not sure why a multi-billion-dollar conglomerate would think that an emulator would enable piracy, as the developers themselves did not provide any games. In fact, the forums were actively moderated and removed mentions of pirated game links.

Vimm’s Lair is a popular site for getting ROMs off the Internet

Nonetheless, we would be lying if we said that many people don’t resort to piracy when emulating, no matter what device they’re trying to emulate. Piracy is very common in emulation circles, and in recent years, it has become even more commonplace. A number of factors can be attributed to this; the increasing game prices, region-locking, no legal way to purchase the game, or just to spite Nintendo.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, what emulator you decide to go with is totally up to you. Try them all and see which one yields the best performance on your games. And make sure to stay on the right side of the law, as the high seas can be quite alluring. But don’t forget to have fun!

The original PlayStation | Micoope

Sony’s first console, the PlayStation (commonly known as PS1), was inarguably a major stepping stone into gaming for an entire generation. Not just the hardware, but titles like Final Fantasy, Crash Bandicoot, and Gran Turismo became instant classics and are still etched in the memories of many.

In fact, it can be easy to remember the olden times, but not so easy to find an actual, working PS1. After all, it’s been three decades since its release. For this reason, and because no one uses a CRT TV anymore, a lot of people have turned to emulation on PCs and even mobiles (we have a separate guide on playing PS1 titles on mobiles if you’re interested).

However, these emulators do require something to mimic the actual hardware — a BIOS file. This guide will explain the purpose and importance of the BIOS file and how to find the right version for whatever purpose you need.

How Does a BIOS Work?

In the most basic sense, the BIOS, which stands for “Basic Input/Output System,” is the first layer of software that interacts with your device when it is powered on. It contains basic instructions to check if all necessary components of the device are in a working state and able to function.

After this, the BIOS initializes these components, performs a POST (Power-On Self-Test) to ensure everything is functioning correctly, and loads a particular piece of code, usually the bootloader for the operating system, into memory. This initiates the boot-up process.

READ MORE: What is Power-On Self-Test in Computers? POST Explained ➜

The PlayStation (PS1) BIOS

While “BIOS” is technically a term that originates from PC architecture, the PS1 has a “firmware” that performs in, more or less, the same way. For one, it contains the very basic instructions to initialise the system hardware, making sure that all components are ready to use, when the system is turned on.

The PlayStation 1 | Sony

When you insert a CD into the console, the firmware, or BIOS, doesn’t directly load the game itself. Instead, it first verifies if the disc is a valid PS1 title by reading the boot information and region codes on the game disc.

Once the disc is verified, the BIOS locates the game’s boot sector, which contains the instructions to load the main game executable. The BIOS provides hardware-level support to the boot process, such as memory allocation and initializing hardware components. After these initial steps are completed, the BIOS hands over control to the game code, which is then executed by the console.

⤷ Why Do You Need It?

At this point in time, the main reason for getting hold of a PS1 BIOS file is to emulate the iconic games of the console. Emulators typically require a BIOS file to replicate the functionality of the original hardware on a different device.

You might also have an old PlayStation and wish to revive it by flashing it with a new and supported BIOS file. Some people may also be interested in studying how the BIOS works, although this is pretty much very uncommon.

The Original PlayStation’s Motherboard, Model SCPH-1000

For the vast majority of PS1 emulators, you will certainly need a compatible BIOS file since they rely on low-level emulation, which replicates the hardware functions closely. Some more modern emulators also use high-level emulation, which emulates the console’s functionality without replicating its inner workings.

How to Download and Install the PS1 BIOS?

Before you proceed, it’s important to note that acquiring the BIOS for PS1 can be a legal grey area and is clearly illegal in certain regions under specific circumstances. The BIOS files are Sony’s copyrighted material.

For Educational Purposes Only: At Appuals, we do not condone piracy, and the purpose of this guide is to inform our readers about the functionality and legitimate use of this material.

Step 1: Finding the Right PS1 BIOS Version

For the PS1, it’s important that you use the right version of BIOS to emulate its functionality. This is because Sony’s first two consoles, the PS1 and PS2, were region-locked for games, meaning you won’t be able to play a Japanese game on a European BIOS.

⤷ BIOS Revisions

The first PlayStation didn’t see a simultaneous global release. It launched in Japan in December 1994, and later in North America and Europe in September 1995. Over its production run from 1994 to 2000, Sony made a number of hardware revisions to the console.

PlayStation 1 Hardware Revisions | [Top to Bottom] SCPH-9001, SCPH-5501, SCPH-3000, SCPH-1000

These revisions, coupled with efforts to combat piracy, led to the release of multiple BIOS versions, with nearly over 30 different versions documented. These can be found on resources like the PlayStation Wiki.

⤷ Regional Compatibility

To find the appropriate BIOS version, look for the game you wish to play and where it was released. The BIOS revisions are divided into the television video standards for each corresponding country. For a more detailed insight, Sony has a list of countries with what video format is used in a particular country.

For the PS1 BIOS, regions were divided into NTSC and PAL formats. NTSC was used in countries like the United States, Japan, and parts of South America. PAL was used in Europe, Australia, China, and most of Asia, Africa, and parts of South America.

Step 2: Downloading the BIOS Files

Once you’ve narrowed down the exact BIOS version that suits your needs, the next step is to find reputable resources that are not only safe to download from but also provide the specific BIOS files with the appropriate video standard.

For this guide, we won’t go into detail about the full procedure of downloading the files for legal reasons. However, if you need an extensive library of the PS1 BIOS, you can check out the ROMS Megathread on Reddit. For matching up the BIOS version, the file hashes list from GameTechWiki should suffice.

Step 3: Using the BIOS With an Emulator

A number of PlayStation emulators, such as ePSXe, RetroArch, Bizhawk and DuckStation, make use of the PS1 BIOS for low-level emulation. This approach is actually preferred by a lot of users since it replicates the exact functionality of the original hardware.

Ape Escape 1, a PlayStation Classic

In the past, people had to obtain the BIOS file from the console itself, which was a process that wasn’t suited for beginners and was a tad bit complex. But as emulation continued to grow, a lot more BIOSes were dumped onto the internet. Now, some emulators like DuckStation often come with a compatible BIOS file without the need to manually feed it a file. However, there’s also an option to import your own file if you wish to do so.

The Future of PS1 Emulation

While emulation is generally considered a legal grey area, it is important to note that it plays a huge role in the preservation of older consoles. PlayStation is currently the most popular gaming console and it’s vital for upcoming generations to understand where it all started, and how the landscape of gaming, not just in terms of hardware, but the software too, grew.

Crash Bandicoot (PS1) Running on Android

The legal issues with emulation stem from the use of copyrighted software, such as BIOS files and game ROMs. Developers often use legal alternatives like high-level emulation (HLE), which replicates the functionality and graphical interface of the console using modern hardware and graphic libraries without using the original BIOS.

Some people, however, don’t prefer this approach since it can sometimes look ‘better’ than the original console, potentially interfering with the “raw PS1 gaming experience.

It is important to know that emulation, in general, is statistically shown to grow with time, not just for the PS1. This is mainly due to improved hardware, especially on handheld devices like your phone or even handheld consoles like the Steam Deck.

The drawback of this, however, is that it can sometimes be incredibly unoptimized, sometimes bursting your fans to their limit, drawing the maximum amount of power, all for a game that was developed more than two and a half decades ago.

Conclusion

The PS1’s BIOS went through multiple revisions during its six-year production run. These revisions were often tied to a specific region, as the console was region-locked. However, in today’s time, it is easy to find a compatible BIOS due to the influx of resources available on the Internet. Some modern emulators don’t even use the actual BIOS, simply to circumvent the legal consequences.

FAQs

Why is it important to use a BIOS for PS1 emulation?

Emulation generally aims to mimic the hardware and software configuration of the original device, in our case, the PS1. The BIOS replicates the functionality on a newer, modern device.

Can I play PS1 games without the BIOS file?

It really depends on the emulator you’re using. Some rely on low-level emulation, which is essential to import a BIOS file. Others generally use HLE algorithms to mimic the functionality, running on the newest graphic libraries and hardware. Your choice of emulator will determine whether or not you need a standalone BIOS file.

How will PS1 emulation grow if considered a legal grey area?

PS1 emulation has now grown to mobile devices, where some emulators, to work around the legal intricacies, incline towards HLE, which not only doesn’t require the BIOS file but uses modern software to replicate only what you see on the screen.

We’ve all seen the memes where some Internet troll proceeds to undermine another person on the Internet and the victim then responds with the troll’s IP address, which shuts the troll up for good. The act of retrieving another person’s IP address is known as IP logging. The memes may make it out to be quite funny, but it has far more disturbing implications

Although you might expect these types of exchanges on video games on PC, you’ll be surprised to know that IP logging can also happen when gaming on the PS4. And if a player decides to reply with your IP address just because you made a snide remark about how he missed an easy kill, there’s no other comeback other than responding in the same manner.

But how does one IP log, especially on a PS4? Let’s find out.

IP logging is entirely possible on the PS4 with the right tools and configurations

What is an IP Logger?

While IP logging is legal in most states and countries, that doesn’t mean that it’s totally fine to do it. An IP address can be used to triangulate someone’s home address without their consent, which is a direct invasion of their privacy and illegal. Appuals does not condone this behavior and the following content is strictly for educational purposes.

An IP logger is a tool that can be used to retrieve the IP address of a person using the Internet. IP loggers are commonly used in website development where you need to verify the region of the person browsing your website e.g. when you’re trying to browse Amazon, it will automatically redirect you to your region based off your IP address, so that can get the accurate price and shipping charges.

Setting Up your PS4 for IP Logging

Since the PS4 has limited capabilities when it comes to tasks other than gaming, for most IP loggers, you’ll need to set up your PS4 in a particular manner. Don’t worry, you won’t have to jailbreak your PS4. Therefore, before you can begin IP logging on the PS4, you’ll need 2 things:

↪ Requirements

  1. A Windows desktop or laptop device
  2. 2 Ethernet cables.
  3. A USBtoRJ45 adapter (optional; only if your Windows device does not have 2 Ethernet ports).

Once you have the following components, you’ll need to route your Internet through the Windows device to your PS4. Here’s how you can do this:

↪ Setup Process

  1. Use one of the Ethernet cables to establish a connection between your Windows device and router.
  2. Next, use the other Ethernet cable and join your Windows device and PS4. (Use the USB-to-RJ45 adapter if your Windows device does not possess a second Ethernet port). Power on your PS4 when you’re done connecting the Ethernet cable.
  3. Now, on your Windows device, open up the Control Panel.
Open up the “Control Panel” using the “Search” feature
  4. On the Control Panel, click on the View network status and tasks option under the Network and Internet section.
Choose the “View network status and tasks” option
  5. Then, from the sidebar, click on the Change adapter options.
Choose the “Change adapter settings” options
  6. On the window that appears, will be a list of all the connections that are active, or were active at some point (inactive connections will have a red cross under them). Only 2 connections should be active, so rightclick on the Ethernet option and click on Properties. Make sure that the Ethernet option you select has Network written under Ethernet.
Right-click and select “Properties” on the Ethernet labelled “Network”
  7. In the Properties menu, navigate to the Sharing tab. Put a check in the Allow other users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection checkbox. Use the Home networking connection drop-down menu to select the other (PS4’s) Ethernet option.
Put a check on the checkbox and make sure that you select the Ethernet connected to the PS4
  8. Once done, click on OK to save your settings and exit.
Click on “OK” to save your changes
  9. Now, on the dashboard of your PS4, navigate to Settings (briefcase icon).

Best IP Loggers for the PS4

These are some of the easiest IP loggers to obtain another user’s IP address on the PS4:

1. Octosniff

Octosniff is easy to use and gets the job done quickly and efficiently | Octosniff

Octosniff is probably the best IP logger available for PC, Xbox and PlayStation. A user friendly interface, the ability to identify individual packets and where they’re originating from, along with an exclusive feature that allows the AI within the program to identify the PS4 username behind the packet being transmitted.

Octosniff comes with detailed instructions on how to install and set up the app so you can always consult the instructions if you get stuck. There’s also a frequently active Discord server where you can ask any questions about the features available on the app. The only downside to Octosniff is that its paid, but its a one-time fee.

2. Lanc Remastered PCPS

Lanc Remastered PCPS is the best free IP logger | Lanc Remastered PCPS

Lanc Remastered PCPS is the freemium counterpart of Octosniff. With nearly the same features, Lanc should be the best option for you if you don’t want to pay for Octosniff. It also has a free Gamertag Resolver where you can search for any player based on their gametag, although this might be a bit hit-or-miss since the database of players is compiled based on user information.

Lanc Remastered offers premium features at a decent price, which you probably won’t need. It’s basic app is more than enough and the website offers a comprehensive and detailed setup guide and instructions along with all the various tools their app endorses. They also have a mobile app, although it has limited functionality.

3. xResolver

xResolver can be somewhat reliable when trying to grab IPs

Another simple search tool that also offers various paid Octosniff add-ons, xResolver is another user-compiled database where you can try and search any PlayStation player’s username and try to grab their IP address. xResolver is free to use and pretty reliable in most cases.

4. Grabify

Grabify is an IP logger that requires the user that you’re targeting to click on a shortened link. Unlike the typical spam shortened link, this link won’t be spam; it will direct the user to the original link without any delays. Using Grabify is really easy; just follow the steps below:

  1. First, copy the link of any webpage.
  2. Next, open up the Grabify website and paste the link on the search bar present at the front. Click on Create URL.
Click “Create URL” after pasting the link
  3. Click on I Agree and Create URL on the menu that pops up.
Click on “I Agree and Create URL”
  4. Once the page loads, select the Copy button to copy the shortened URL and send it to the player whose IP you want to grab.
Copy the shortened URL and send it to someone
  5. Keep refreshing the page to see if they’ve opened the link. If they have, you’ll see their IP and other relevant info.
If they’ve clicked on the link, you’ll be able to see their IP after refreshing the page

IP Addresses and Internet Privacy

Today, IP addresses are considered, according to most laws, public information. The fact that tools like those mentioned above exist, and that most websites have access to your IP, make it more than true enough. As we mentioned earlier, websites like Amazon will access your IP to designate the proper region to you.

Similarly, a subscription service like Netflix, infamous for the varying content in different regions, checks your IP for your region and the content you’ll be able to access. What about using VPNs to bypass those restrictions? Well, a VPN may trick these websites but it depends on the type of VPN you’re using; a paid and premium one like NordVPN could work, while the random free VPN you downloaded may not.

Nord VPN is one of the best VPN services available

Your ISP, naturally, is aware of your IP address. Even while using a VPN, they’ll see the IP address the VPN is using. However, any data you browse or view will show not up on your ISP’s database, provided that you use a good VPN. Incognito mode, contrary to popular belief, will not mask your IP at all provides limited privacy, if any at all.

Conclusion

IP addresses, even if they’re considered public information by the law, still contain sensitive information. Therefore, tools like these still these lies in a moral grey area. Naturally, if you’re using them for educational purposes that’s fine, but make sure you limit yourself to that. As the popular saying goes: “Just because you can, doesn’t mean that you should”.

The PS5 error code CE-1173-6 typically occurs when attempting to play online games that require a PlayStation Plus subscription. This error often indicates a problem with verifying your digital ownership of the game you’re trying to play.

This issue commonly stems from a corrupted license on your console. Other factors contributing to this issue include PSN server overloading, maintenance, or an outdated system software.

1. Check the PSN Server Status

It’s helpful to check the PSN server’s status when you encounter error code CE-1173-6, as issues on Sony’s end can sometimes be the cause. Think of the PSN server status as a traffic report, letting you know whether PSN servers are operational or if an outage is contributing to the problem.

  1. Go to the PSN server status page.
  2. Select your region from the drop-down menu under “Select a region to check the network status,” and choose your country.
  3. The PlayStation Network status page will display the server status for your selected region.

2. Restart Your PS5 and Network Router

Restarting your console can clear the temporary cache and prompt a fresh start, while restarting your router can resolve issues like IP address conflicts or routing errors. These simple troubleshooting steps typically take just a few minutes and may resolve the error.

Restarting the Console

  1. Press the PlayStation button on your controller to access the Quick Menu.
  2. Scroll to the right on your screen until you highlight the Power option.
  3. Select Restart PS5 from the power options provided by the quick menu.
  4. Confirm the restart and wait for the PS5 to power off and then turn back on.

Restarting Network Router

  1. Unplug your router for at least 30 seconds to ensure it fully powers down. After restarting the router, check if the error persists.

3. Check Your PS Plus Subscription

An active PlayStation Plus subscription is required for some digital games, particularly online titles. When you try to launch your games, PlayStation checks to verify your license ownership.

  1. Head to the PS5 settings menu.
  2. Go to Users and Accounts, where you can manage user profiles, account settings, and PS subscriptions.
  3. After selecting Users and Accounts, navigate to the Account section to access options specific to your PS Network Account.
  4. Within Account Settings, find an option labeled Payment and Subscription.

4. Restore Your License

The PS5 verifies your ownership of digital content, including games and DLCs, through licenses. If there are glitches with the license on your console, restoring them can solve errors and ensure your PS5 has the most current license information.

  1. Navigate to the Settings tab on your PS5.
  2. Choose Users and Accounts from the options listed.
  3. Select the Other category from the menu.
  4. Choose Restore Licenses from the given options, initiating a re-verification process between your console and Sony’s servers.

5. Update System Software

Updating your console software improves the overall functionality and performance by introducing new features, fixing bugs and glitches that were discovered in the previous software version, and updating security patches.

  1. Navigate to the Settings menu on your PS5.
  2. Select System, followed by System Software.
  3. Choose System Software Update and Settings.
  4. If an update is available, select Update System Software and follow the instructions to complete the process.

6. Renew Encryption Key

When a user updates system software, the encryption key used to play Blu-ray disks is automatically renewed in the background.

  1. With the PS5 turned on, insert a game disc and allow the console to recognize it.
  2. Follow any on-screen prompts to renew the encryption key.

7. Check for Game-Specific Updates

This option on PS5 allows the user to manually initiate and search for updates specific to a particular game you have installed, ensuring that you have the latest version of the game.

  1. Highlight the game on the PS5 home screen.
  2. Press the Options button on your controller.
  3. Select Check for Update.
  4. Install any available updates for the game.

8. Rebuild Database

Rebuilding your database on PS5 is a troubleshooting step that can help improve performance and resolve certain issues. It helps in fixing database corruption and resolving fragmented data.

  1. Turn off your PS5 completely.
  2. Press and hold the power button until you hear the second beep to enter Safe Mode.
  3. Connect the controller with the USB cable and press the PS button on the controller.
  4. Select Rebuild Database and wait for the process to complete.

9. Contact PlayStation Support

If none of the above steps work, it might be time to get professional help.

  1. Visit the official PlayStation Support website.
  2. Use their contact form, chat service, or phone number to reach out for assistance.

If you experience the SU-41333-4 error on your PlayStation, it may signal more than just a hardware failure. This error can be triggered by various factors—including a sudden power outage while the system is operational, installing a new hard drive, updating the console via USB, or even during the initialization process.

SU-41333-4
SU-41333-4

Basic Troubleshooting

Begin with a simple step:

  • Power cycling: Turn off the console and disconnect all cables (USB, HDMI, LAN, Power, etc.). Remove the console’s hard drive and leave it unattached for 2 hours. Afterwards, reconnect only the USB, HDMI, and power cords. Attach the controller and power on your PS4.

1. Initialize the PlayStation

The SU-41333-4 error sometimes appears when a crucial software component within the console is corrupted, making a file inaccessible. Initialization of the PS4 can resolve this issue.

Be aware that this will erase all data on the console that isn’t backed up either locally or online.

  1. Turn off the PlayStation. Once the status light is off, unplug any external devices.
  2. Press and hold the console’s power button.
  3. Release the button upon hearing the second beep, approximately 7 seconds later.
  4. Connect a controller via a USB cable and press the PS button.
  5. Select option 6, Initialize PS4 (Full Factory Reset).

Initialize PS4 Through the Safe Mode
Initialize PS4 Through the Safe Mode
  6. Follow the onscreen instructions to reconfigure your PlayStation.

2. Reinstall the System Software on the PS4

If the PS4’s system software is severely damaged and can’t be restored to factory settings, reinstalling the software can fix the problem.

Note that this will permanently erase all unsaved data on the internal drive.

  1. Use a USB storage device and connect it to your desktop PC (Windows, Mac, etc.).
  2. Format the device with the exFAT file system and create a folder named PS4 (in uppercase).
  3. Inside the PS4 folder, create a subfolder called UPDATE (also in uppercase).
  4. Go to the official PS4 system software download page and download the PS4 Console Reinstallation File (about 1 GB). Rename the downloaded file to PS4UPDATE.PUP (all uppercase).

    Download PS4 Console Reinstallation File
    Download PS4 Console Reinstallation File
  5. Transfer the file to the UPDATE folder on your USB device, then safely eject it from your PC.

    Update PS4 File
    Update PS4 File
  6. With the PlayStation powered off and the status lights out, insert the USB device containing the update into the console.
  7. Hold the Power button until a second beep is heard (about 7 seconds), then release.
  8. Connect the controller via a USB cable and press the PS button. Choose option 7, Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software).

    Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software)
    Initialize PS4 (Reinstall System Software)
  9. Select Update from USB Storage Device and confirm with OK. If the USB is not detected, try again with the USB plugged into a different slot. Moreover, check that the folder and file names match those specified in steps 3 to 8.
  10. Wait for the process to finish and proceed to configure your console.

3. Format the Console’s Hard Disk on a PC

An SU-41333-4 error may occur if the PS4 cannot perform read/write operations on its disk. Initializing the console will not remedy this; instead, you will need to format the hard disk on a PC.

Before proceeding, ensure all data on the console’s drive is backed up since it will be erased. Importantly, when executing the Clean command, verify that the intended console drive is selected to avoid permanent loss of data from a different drive.

Below, we outline the steps for a Windows PC:

  1. Power off the console and remove its hard disk.
  2. Connect the hard disk to a PC or laptop. An adapter may be necessary.
  3. Right-click the Windows start button and choose Disk Management.
  4. Locate the console’s hard disk by its size and record its disk number (e.g., Disk 1).

Check Disk Number of the Console's Hard Disk in the Computer's Disk Management
Check the Disk Number of the Console’s Hard Disk in the Computer’s Disk Management
  5. Press the Windows key, search for Command Prompt, and run it as an administrator.
  6. Enter the following command and press Enter:
    diskpart
  7. Enter the next command and press Enter:
    list disk
  8. Identify the console’s hard disk by the number noted before and its size. Use the number to select the correct disk, as selecting the wrong disk can cause irreversible data loss.
  9. Type the following, substituting “x” with your console’s disk number:
    select disk x
  10. If, for example, the console’s hard drive is Disk 1, double-check and then type:
    select disk 1
  11. Execute the following, which will irreversibly wipe all data on the disk:
    Clean

Use the DiskPart to Clean the Console's Hard Disk
Use the DiskPart to Clean the Console’s Hard Disk
  12. Type Exit and press Enter to leave the Diskpart utility.
  13. Close Command Prompt and disconnect the hard disk from your PC.
  14. Finally, reattach the hard disk to your PlayStation and reinstall the system software as previously described.

If the problem still lingers, it may be due to a hardware issue, ranging from a blown capacitor on the motherboard to a defective hard drive.

2013 was a big year for gamers and tech enthusiasts, you had the unveiling of the PlayStation 4 that set the stage for a new era of console gaming, the revolutionary Oculus Rift prototype at E3 and finally you had the excitement around Microsoft’s newest edition to Xbox’s gaming lineup.

The Xbox One was claimed to be “the biggest launch of an Xbox ever” and whether it delivered that promise or not is what we’ll look into. So, buckle up for another trip down memory lane, exploring the release dates of the original Xbox One and how well Sony’s competitor did in the gaming industry.

Closer look at Xbox One

When Did The Xbox One Come Out?

The Xbox One was released on November 22, 2013, in North America, South America, Australia and parts of Europe. For other countries like Japan, China, and other European countries, Xbox One didn’t come until September 2014. It came as the successor to the Xbox 360 console which had sold 85.7 million units to compete with Sony’s PlayStation 4.

In fact, the Xbox One was released a week before the PS4 launch which came to major countries like Europe, South America, and Australia on November 29, 2013. The Xbox One was released on the same date as the Xbox 360 in North America but with an 8-year gap between their launches.

Specs and Features of The Xbox One

The Xbox One was Microsoft’s take on combining gaming and entertainment into one small VCR-style console design. From watching Netflix to being able to watch live TV even when playing games, Xbox One was all set to being the perfect little home entertainment system. It was originally shipped with the Kinect camera, allowing users to control games using body movements and voice commands.

Compared to its predecessor, Xbox One also had a few improvements and featured an 8-core x86 processor running at 1.75GHz, and 8 GB of RAM. Additionally, the console also introduced a new and improved controller along with the ability to support eight controllers at once. With later updates, Xbox One was also capable of backward compatibility and could run over 600 titles from Xbox 360.

Other Models of The Xbox One

Microsoft expanded the Xbox One lineup to three main models, introducing two new editions named the Xbox One S and the Xbox One X. Let’s take a closer look at both of them.

1. Xbox One S — Disk and Digital Edition

The Xbox One S was the next in line after the Xbox One and brought along a few hardware and quality-of-life changes. The console was introduced in 2016 and had a major redesign making it around 40% smaller than the original Xbox One. On top of that, the console was also 7% faster in terms of overall performance and came with a white theme instead of a black one.

Xbox One S all editions

Later on, Microsoft introduced another variant of the Xbox One S in 2019 which was the All-Digital Edition. As it’s in the name, the Xbox One S All Digital Edition didn’t have a disk drive and instead required users to download games through the Microsoft store. Apart from the disc drive change, the console was identical to the normal Xbox One S.

2. Xbox One X

Next, we had the Xbox One X which was around 4.5 times more powerful than the original Xbox One. The best part about the Xbox One X was the ability to watch movies and play games in true 4K. With the Xbox One X gamers could also experience an FPS boost of up to 120 FPS for supported games like Fortnite, COD Warzone, Halo Infinite, and more.

Xbox One Launch Titles

The Xbox One console wasn’t without a handful of solid day-one games and part of its success can be attributed to the strong launch titles such as:

  1. Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag
  2. Battlefield 4
  3. Call of Duty: Ghosts
  4. Crimson Dragon
  5. Dead Rising
  6. Fighter Within
  7. Forza Motorsport 5
  8. Just Dance 2014
  9. LocoCycle
  10. Ryse: Son of Rome
  11. Zoo Tycoon
  12. Zumba Fitness: World Party
Xbox Launch Titles

The Xbox One revived cross-generation games, with hits like Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, Battlefield 4, and Call of Duty: Ghosts leading the way at its launch. However, both the new exclusive Forza Motorsport 5 and Crimson Dragon disappointed gamers.

How Successful Was the Xbox One?

When it comes to sharing sales numbers for its Xbox consoles and whether they performed well or not, Microsoft has left us in the dark for almost 8 years now. However, that’s not the case anymore, as we now have something to work with thanks to the court documents that were released during Microsoft’s controversial and massive buyout of Activision Blizzard.

Xbox acquires Activision Blizzard

According to the court documents, Sony sold over twice as many PS4 consoles as Microsoft’s last-gen Xbox. “Sony has surpassed Microsoft in terms of console sales and installed base, having sold more than twice as many Xbox [consoles] in the last generation.

While this statement doesn’t give us a clear look into the actual numbers, it still helps us calculate a few. Sony reported lifetime sales of the PS4 exceeding 117 million, whereas the Xbox One fell short at less than 58 million, with estimates indicating a figure closer to 55 million.

What Did Microsoft Do Wrong With the Xbox One?

The Xbox 360 was always more than just a game console, but, what made the Xbox 360 so popular was the gaming part and not the entertainment part. With the Xbox One, Microsoft decided to focus so much on non-gaming features that they marketed it as more of a home entertainment system rather than a gaming system made for gamers. Apart from that, here’s what Microsoft did wrong:

1. The Mandatory Kinect Camera

The Kinect originally made its debut with the Xbox 360 as an optional accessory that steered Microsoft toward the path of the “future of gaming.” While the accessory was great, it was in the end “optional.” However, with the Xbox One, Microsoft decided to make it a mandatory accessory. Every single console would ship with one and users were dragged into using it otherwise your console wouldn’t function.

Kinect Camera

The Kinect Camera not only made the console more expensive but it also placed Microsoft right in the middle of a security concern (camera and microphone active all the time). Unsurprisingly, Microsoft reverted the Kinect as an optional, leading to its end.

2. Always Online

During the Xbox One announcement, Microsoft also announced that the console would require a constant internet connection at all times. This meant that even when playing a single-player game, you would need an internet connection to Microsoft’s servers at least once every day.

3. Sharing and Buying Games

Microsoft wanted digital gaming with the Xbox One and while the idea was great the execution wasn’t. In the Xbox One’s proposed system, the concept of borrowing a game was not possible as after a disk was used, it was simply useless. This disrupted the entire used games market, leaving gamers to assume that this was a money move toward Microsoft’s digital store.

4. Price Point

The Xbox One launched at $499, $100 more than the $399 PlayStation 4. The price difference was partly due to the mandatory Kinect Camera and apart from that there was nothing to justify the high cost. In fact, due to PS4’s better specs and a smoother launch, the higher cost ultimately hurt Microsoft. This led to the PlayStation 4 taking a big lead in the eighth generation, causing a setback for Microsoft and the Xbox brand.

Less than a month after the E3 2013, the CEO of Microsoft’s Xbox division left the company and was replaced by Phil Spencer. Phil fixed everything that had gone wrong, made Xbox One playable without online connections, and brought back used games.

Although current Xbox One owners can still play games, upcoming changes in exclusive titles and Game Pass may make the older console less relevant. The post-apocalyptic genre has been around for quite some time and has been a part of all kinds of fictional media; books, movies, TV shows, games etc. While it may have become quite overused, that doesn’t mean that it has put out stale offerings. The PS4 has enjoyed a large number of absolute gems that should be a part of every gamer’s play-list. Here are the best post-apocalyptic games on the PS4.

1. The Last of Us Duology

The Last of Us games are the best post-apocalyptic games on the PS4 | Amazon

This was an expected entry on this list and rightly so. In case you’ve been living under a rock, the Last of Us games have become the new epitome of post-apocalyptic zombie shooters. With both games boasting high attention to detail and extremely realistic mechanics, they capture the true survivalist feel of a post-apocalyptic world.

But, undoubtedly, the best part about these games is the narrative, which has received wide praise from all kinds of audiences and critics. The story follows the adventure of Joel and Ellie, his adopted daughter, as they find their way through a zombie-infested America and work to hide Ellie’s secret from the government, with the help of their friends and family.

2. Horizon Duology

Horizon is known for its breath-taking visuals and action-packed combat | PlayStation

If you’re looking for a break from the good old-fashioned post-apocalyptic zombie shooters, Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West might be right up your alley. Set in a futuristic post-apocalyptic world where the world is overrun by large robots designed like animals, Horizon features a vast open world that is ripe with resources and all kinds of artificial wildlife.

In Horizon, you take control of Aloy, an outcast of her own tribe. After winning the favor of her tribe, she sets out to get revenge against those who killed her mentor. Horizon features fast-paced battles against both machines and humans. One thing is for sure, Horizon is a unique experience that is bound to capture you with its breathtaking visuals and engaging narrative.

3. Fallout 4

Fallout 4 brilliantly captures a post-nuclear holocaust world | Steam

It would be criminal to talk about the post-apocalyptic genre and ignore Fallout. One of the first game series to adopt the post-apocalyptic genre, Fallout is the most well-known amongst hardcore fans of the genre. Unfortunately, not all games of the Fallout series are available to play on the PS4, but luckily, the narratives are not linked, so you can play Fallout 4 as a standalone game.

Set in a world that had to face a nuclear holocaust, Fallout 4 is a role-playing game where players can decide between 4 factions: the Institute, Brotherhood of Steel, Minutemen and Railroad. Featuring a vast open world where players are free to interact with other characters and make decisions that will change the outcome of the game, Fallout 4 is a great game that is bound to leave a lasting impression on you.

4. Resident Evil Series

Resident Evil is the definitive zombie shooter series for many | Capcom

The original post-apocalyptic zombie third-person shooter, Capcom‘s Resident Evil has come a long way and has come to define a whole generation of gamers. For many, it is the definitive zombie shooter; all others pale in comparison. The series’ titular Chris Redfield, Ada Wong, Albert Wesker and Leon Kennedy have become pop culture icons.

Thanks to the recent remakes, you can now play nearly every single Resident Evil game on the PS4, including some spin-offs. Although the series seems to have diverted from its original roots in the 7th installment, it still remains a solid post-apocalyptic game with an exceptional narrative and gameplay.

5. Days Gone

Riding around on a bike and mowing down zombies seems like a great idea | PlayStation

Bend Studio‘s underrated masterpiece, Days Gone is a fantastic open-world third-person shooter game. Set in a zombie post-apocalyptic Oregon, Days Gone has you take control of Deacon, who scours the land on his bike looking for supplies to help out his allies and friends, while searching for leads on his long-lost wife, Sarah.

Days Gone is any zombie-shooter fan’s dream come true. With a large and expansive world teeming with zombies, called Freakers in the game, limited resources to give a true survivalist feel, and a great storyline, it is hard to deny the appeal of this gem.

6. Tom Clancy’s The Division 2

The Division 2 might be the best multiplayer post-apocalyptic game | Steam

Looking to enjoy a post-apocalyptic game with your gaming buddies? The Division 2 is what you’re looking for. Ubisoft is a household name by now when it comes to making unique multiplayer games. The Division 2 is no exception and is another great title among Ubisoft’s existing lineup of upstanding multiplayer installments.

The Division 2 is set in a post-apocalyptic and war-ravaged Washington DC. It is a third-person tactical shooter, with great emphasis on teamwork and strategy. Players need to design their characters and need work their way up by exploring the open-world and completing quests. The more skilled you are, the better the variety of weapons you will be able to obtain and use.

7. Dying Light Duology

Dying Light is best known for its parkour | Steam

Need a fast-paced, action-packed, zombie post-apocalyptic game, but bored with the normal run-of-the-mill shooting aspect? Dying Light is perfect for your needs. The Dying Light games have become fan-favorites, thanks to their adrenaline-fueled action and survivalist feel that requires you to depend entirely upon your resources when it comes defending yourself; whether against zombies or hostile humans.

The best part about the Dying Light games is the parkour mechanic. Dying Light has a first-person perspective and the variety of parkour moves performed, augmented by your grappling gun, makes sure that no nook and cranny goes unsearched in the vast open-world. Guns are a luxury, so you have to depend entirely upon traditional melee weapons.

Grappling around the city like Batman, while running from zombies doesn’t sound so bad right?

8. The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series

The Telltale Definitive Series is probably one of the best narrative driven games of the last decade | Steam

The Walking Dead is another household name when it comes post-apocalyptic zombie-infested worlds, thanks to its wildly popular TV show by the same name developed by AMC. The Telltale Definitive Series is separate from the TV show and is an entirely narrative-driven experience, where the user is only required to perform a few simple actions, but mostly spends time choosing the right dialogue or action.

The Telltale Definitive Series might seem a bit barebones, as it doesn’t seem to require a lot of user engagement and is more similar to a movie. But the narrative is nothing to scoff at, as the game’s outcome depends on what type of person you are based n the choices you make. Trust us, you’re in for a roller-coaster of an experience.

9. Metro Series

The Metro game series is grim and gritty to its core | WePC

The Metro game series is similar to Fallout; you find yourself in the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust and have find your way through the post-apocalyptic Russia, which has established metros, which are shelters for people who have survived the holocaust. As supplies are scarce, factions have been formed that compete for these supplies. The popular factions are the Hanza, Red Line and Rangers of the Order.

However, in terms of gameplay Metro and Fallout differ vastly. Metro is first-person shooter, while in Fallout, you can toggle between both first and third-person perspectives. Metro also has a more grim and sinister atmosphere, and like Fallout, questions the player’s morality. It also forces the player scavenge for supplies and features some of the most grotesque creatures; a side-effect of the nuclear radiations.

10. NieR Duology

NieR is a must-play for JRPG fans | Square Enix

For JRPG fans looking to enjoy the post-apocalyptic genre, NieR: Replicant and NieR: Automata are the perfect games. Square Enix is no stranger to great JRPGs and NieR is a perfect example of this. Set in world that is far in the future, where the Earth has been invaded by alien machines.

Humans, who now live in space, design androids and send them to Earth to combat and eradicate these machines, in hopes of liberating the Earth. Each android, while not completely human, is similar to one and has a distinct personality. They are also capable of showing emotion, although this capability varies over the model.

With an expansive, beautifully designed world, soothing soundtrack and classic hack-and slash style combat, NieR is checks all the right boxes, and is also recommended for non-JRPG fans,

11. Death Stranding

Death Stranding has a beautiful world | Kojima Productions

For players looking for a more relaxed experience with a strong narrative, Death Stranding is what you’ll want to check out. The most recent game from legendary game developer Hideo Kojima, Death Stranding is a game set in a post-apocalyptic world where humans live in shelters due to the occurrence of an unexplained phenomenon. It rendered the world inhabitable and gave birth to strange life-forms.

You take control of Sam Bridges, played by actor Norman Reedus, a porter who has a special suit that allows him to explore the Earth’s surface. The game has very complicated narrative so you’ll have to keep a close eye on that. Other than Norman Reedus, the game also features cameos from other Hollywood celebrities like Guillermo del Toro and Lea Seydoux.

12. Nuclear Throne

Nuclear Throne is best enjoyed with friends | Steam

Indie lovers rejoice; this is the post-apocalyptic game you need to play. Nuclear Throne is a roguelike shooter game that can become chaotic pretty fast. The story has creatures, called mutants, aiming to reach the Nuclear Throne by travelling the world. The player must stop them by taking control of one of 12 characters, each of whom has their own unique ability.

The game can be enjoyed in single-player and a local co-op mode. The gameplay is pretty simple; aim and shoot down the mutants. Over the course of the game, you’ll receive power-ups and new guns to help you in this task. Despite this, the game is an absolute thrill, and the anarchy starts almost immediately.
